Telegram scam: how to tell if a message is a trap?

Telegram has become a playground for fake jobs, fake crypto investments and fake support. Here's how to spot them.

Why Telegram attracts scammers

Telegram lets you message a stranger without having their number, create huge groups, and stay nearly anonymous. Scammers impersonate brands (Binance, banks, telecom operators) there, offer "work-from-home jobs" or "trading signals" that end up with a request for money.

"Pump" groups and "crypto signal" groups are particularly dangerous. You're shown screenshots of "members" who supposedly earned thousands of euros in a few days. Those screenshots are almost all fake: they're other scammers or bots. Once you've transferred your crypto to the recommended platform, you never see it again.

Another common trap: fake support. You write in an official channel to ask for help, and someone in a private message presents themselves as an "admin" or "moderator". Real support teams never reach out privately first. If you're asked for your seed phrase, your password, or a transfer to "unlock" your account, it's a scam 100% of the time.

Warning signs on Telegram

  • You're added to an unknown Telegram group (trading, crypto, easy jobs).
  • A "recruiter" offers a very well-paid job you can do from your phone.
  • You're promised huge crypto returns within a few days.
  • An "official support" (bank, Binance, Wallet) messages you privately.
  • You're asked for your code, your seed phrase or a transfer to "unlock" earnings.
  • The account has a generic photo, little activity, and a strange @username.

The right moves

  1. Never give out your seed phrase, OTP code or PIN — no legitimate support ever asks for these.
  2. Leave immediately any group you were added to without your consent.
  3. Check a brand's official account on its website, not through a Telegram link.
  4. Enable privacy settings: Settings → Privacy → Who can add me to groups → My contacts.
  5. Report the account (Report) and block it.
